What can an 8 ton truck carry?
An 8 to 9 ton truck is built to carry roughly 8 to 9 tonnes of palletised or bulk goods. The exact payload depends on the body: a heavy refrigerated body or crane leaves less capacity than a dropside or curtain side. Ask us for the payload of the specific truck before you buy.
What is the difference between payload and GVM on an 8 ton truck?
Payload is what the truck can carry. GVM (gross vehicle mass) is the legal maximum for the truck, body and load together, so it is always higher. Trucks sold as 8 to 9 ton usually have a GVM of about 15 to 16 tonnes, for example the FAW 15-180FL, Fuso FJ16 and Hino 1627. The GVM is on the vehicle plate, and we can confirm it for any truck in stock.
Which licence do I need to drive an 8 to 9 ton truck?
In South Africa a Code C1 licence covers vehicles with a GVM between 3,500 kg and 16,000 kg, which includes most trucks in this class. A truck above 16,000 kg GVM needs a Code C licence, so check the GVM of the specific truck first.
